Son of John Matthew "Matthew" Simmons and Clementine (Stipe) [Simmons] Lawson. Matthew was murdered as a civilian in 1863 as a result of the American Civil War.

Brother of John Thomas "Tommy" Simmons, Dora (Simmons) Lawson, and Belle Zora (Simmons) Simmons.

Half-brother of George Lawson, William "Willie" Lawson, Sara Ellen "Ellen" (Lawson) Farmer, and Florence May Lawson.

Husband of Mary Palestine "Tine" (Wheeler) Simmons.

Father of William Pinkney "Bill" Simmons, Charles Edward "Charlie" Simmons, Samuel LaFayette "Sam L." Simmons, Flaura B. (Simmons) [Dandridge] Mabee, Sarah Jane (Simmons) Walling, John Matthew "Johnie" Simmons, Dora Etta "Etta" (Simmons) Smith, and Mayme Ruth (Simmons) [Curtis] [Johnson] Schaefer.

He owned a farm on the Cumberland Plateau in Bledsoe County, TN; and, in his retirement years, he sold the farm and moved to the city of Pikeville, where he lived until his death.

He enjoyed playing the fiddle.
