Ollis was born on 5 April, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Rufus and Velma Bajon Hughes. His passing away at home, Brandon, Florida, on 11 January 2019 wasn't expected since it was believed he was recovering from a recent illness. The family located to McDill Air Force base in Tampa, Florida following WWII. His parents divorced and his mother remarried, Carl Shaw, where they resided in the Forest Hills area of Tampa.
Ollis attended Chamberlin High School where he played foot ball and was active in the choir and drama club. Following high school graduation, he attended fire school in Gainesville, Florida. His first ‘real’ job was in the forestry department for the state of Florida. Ollis married Susan Blackwell about 1966 but they divorced by 1969 and he married Connie Merrell that same year. He had two sons, Adam and Scott.
At the age of 21, Ollis was accepted in the Tampa Police Department where he was employed for 20 years. After leaving the police department, Ollis worked at Tampa General Hospital in food services where he retired in 2012.
Ollis was an outgoing and friendly person. He was active at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa and was the facilitator of the CUUPS (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) chapter affiliated with the church. He was well known and loved in the pagan community. He was a member of the Brandon Masonic Lodge #114. He is survived by two sons, Adam Hughes (Ana); and Scott Hughes (Carol); grandson, Brandon Hughes; brother, Lewis Shaw: sister, Laura Hughes Kromer, along with nieces and a nephew. His stories, jokes, and humor, will be remembered with great fondness. His loss is strongly felt by many friends and family in the community.

For Ollis
Home,
I'm coming home again,
home to the Sumerlands,
to the Elissian fields,
to the stars and beyond into forever,
until I am rested,
until I am ready,
until my time comes, again
and I come home, again
to those I love and the sweet Earth
and the beauty of the day.
