He won the 2018 Disney's Wide World of Sports Spirit Award, and received in 2018 the Sagamore of the Wabash award. He worked as a writer for the Purdue student newspaper, and later started a program called Teens with a Cause, which helps families of cancer patients. Towards the end of his life, he published his autobiography, "The Upset." His courage and passion for life and for college football was recognized and appreciated across the nation.
