Steve and the entire Bates Family are remembered as athletes. Even when Steve and his siblings, Carol and Danny, were in Central Grade School, the entire family took annual ski trips to the world famous resort in Sun Valley, Idaho. In his senior year at Petoskey High School, Steve was captain of the ski team after participating all 4 years. He was active in Hi-Y, Ink Slingers, Football, Basketball, and Track. The Bates Field on the Petoskey Waterfront was named for his father Dr. Leighton Bates who was known for promoting Little League Baseball in Petoskey. The park was dedicated to him in 1963. For many years Steve was the Principal at Traverse City Middle School. Upon retirement, he and his wife made their home on Duck's Lake in Michigan's U.P., near Watersmeet, Michigan. Following his death, a memorial service was held in the upper peninsula durning the warmer months. His ashes were spread along his favorite spot in the U.P. Steve's death was mourned by his wife and two daughters, as well as his brother, Dr. Daniel Bates and his family, his brother-in-law, Bill Hansen and his family, as well as many other relatives and friends.
