SAMMIS, Lucetta Eggleston Crawford, 92, died February 11, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Rogers Sammis; and siblings, Harriet Crawford Tinsley, Deane Crawford, Johnson Crawford Jr. and Charlotte Crawford.


She is survived by her half brother, Frank Herbert Couch Jr. of Otter Creek, Fla.; as well as her three daughters, Cape Applegate Camblos and husband, John, Stephany Breed and husband, Bill, all of Bon Air, Va., and Charlotte Sterling of Alpharetta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, Kathryn A. Duffer and husband, Mike, Anne Applegate, Elizabeth A. Gillespie and husband, Bill, Stephen Sterling and wife, Cindy, Ashley Sterling, John Sterling and wife, Laura, Courtney Biggs and husband, David, Alexander Swartz and wife, Katie, James Breed and wife, Amelia and Andrew Breed; 14 great-grandchildren, McKinley and Rosalie Duffer, Sarah Mills, Bret and Katie Sterling, Kaylee and Samantha Sterling, Cannon, Zachary, Bryce and Teddy Biggs, Russell and Sophia Swartz and Ember Breed.


Lucetta was born March 24, 1916 in Hampton, Va., to Johnson Washington Crawford and his wife, Ada Lucetta Eggleston Crawford. She graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, and worked for the state as a bookkeeper until her marriage. She was a former member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Bon Air, where she was a member of St. Margaret's Guild and served on the Altar Guild. Lucetta did beautiful needlepoint and was an avid bridge player. She had a love of history, and she did genealogy both professionally and privately. In 1992, she published her family history, and later co-authored a book on the Crawford family. Memberships in historical organizations included the Jamestown Society, Colonial Dames 17th Century, National Huguenot Society, National Daughters of the American Revolution, Plantagenet Society, Hanover Historical Society, Guild of St. Margaret of Scotland, Nicholas Merriweather Society, Magna Carta Dames and Descendants of the Washingtons.


Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, February 14, with a service at 2 p.m. at Manakin Episcopal Church, 985 Huguenot Trail, off Robious Road, one mile east of I-288. A private burial service will be held later.
