Statesman. 3rd President of Finland. He served from March 2, 1931 to March 1, 1937. Prior to becoming president he served as the 1st and 9th Prime Minister of Finland from November 27, 1917 to May 27, 1918 and July 4, 1930 to February 18, 1931. He is best remembered for his significant role in Finnish independence from the Russian Empire in 1917 and his determined resistance to Communism.
