Hall of Fame Auto Race Car Driver. Nicknamed "The Silver Fox," he was considered one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing). He showed an interest in stock-car racing as a child. Like many other young drivers of his era, he worked in an auto repair shop and saved his money to buy his own vehicle. He started racing on dirt tracks at the age of 18 and in 1960, started competing on NASCAR's Grand National (now called Sprint Cup) Series. That year, he was named NASCAR's Rookie of the Year after having three top-five finishes. He went on to compete on the NASCAR circuit until 1986, becoming one of its most successful drivers. His best years were in 1966, 1968, and 1973, in which he won over ten races. During his career, he won 105 races and three NASCAR Championships (1966, 1968, and 1969). In 1976, he won his only Daytona 500 in his career. During his NASCAR years, he formed a formidable rivalry with Richard Petty and won thirty-three races in which Petty and he finished one-two. He was elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2011.
