William was a Unionist and Union soldier as well as presumed deserter of Co. E, 2nd NC Mounted Infantry (U.S.) and later the 3rd mounted infantry - (rejoined after first desertion). Him and fellow soldiers and deserters ambushed and killed by confederate soldiers of the 64th North Carolina Infantry (C.S.A.). Near Cold Springs Mountain, his gravestone is located near the Appalachian Trail. Next to his uncle David Shelton Jr. and their scout Millard F. Haire, 13.


Despite being presumed deserters - Gravestones for the two Sheltons were erected by the U.S. government in 1915, but a marker was not placed on Haire's grave 1994.
