Gary was born to Robert B. & Marjorie (Woodson) Howe. After graduation from Central High School, Howe received a four year ROTC Scholarship to Yale University, where he graduated in 1958.
He served in the United States Navy as a Radio & Communications officer and navigator from 1958-1961.
His first job as a journalist was working as a reporter for the Lincoln Star Journal in Lincoln, NE. He was hired by the Omaha World Herald, where he held several editorial jobs, including Editor, where he finished his long distinguished career there from 1962 to 1998.
A particularly proud accomplishment during that time was a land mark case decided in a 9-0 vote by the U.S. Supreme Court for First Amendment Rights.
The Nebraska Press Association inducted Howe into the Hall of Fame two years ago. He believed the World Herald, as a major daily newspaper, should serve the people of Nebraska and Western Iowa. He felt that quality newspapers remain an integral part of a democratic republic.
He was proud of his community and served on many boards. In retirement, Howe dedicated his time to his golf game.
