After Hanna died in 1858, her second husband left Nijverdal, and the four children from her first marriage were abandoned to their fate. At the time, the oldest two children Aartje and Dries were already working in the textile factory in Nijverdal. They found a home with the widow Ter Harmsel. The youngest two children, Willem and Hermannus, had to be supported by the municipality of Hellendoorn, for which a compensation of fl. 2,75 per week was requested from their birth municipality of Ermelo. The mayor of Ermelo thought he could accommodate the children cheaper in his own municipality and therefore Willem and Hermannus were brought to Nunspeet. Willem later returned to Nijverdal, whilst Hermannus emigrated to North America.
