Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born into a noble family, he entered the priesthood on May 28, 1904 and served as a pastor in Berlin 1905-1929 and in Munster 1929-1933. As bishop of Munster, he became known as the "Lion of Munster" for his strong opposition to the Nazi regime. He was elevated to the level of cardinal on February 18, 1946, shortly before his death. He was beatified on October 9, 2005.
