During the War Between the States, David served with Co. G, 14th Georgia Infantry. He enlisted as a private on August 28, 1861 and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on April 4, 1864. He was wounded in 1864 and was present at the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox.

From "History of Worth County, Georgia, 1854-1934," by Lillian Grubbs, Burke & Co, Macon, page 265:
"About 1872, David Champion was elected and served as Tax Collector of Worth County. Later, or about 1888, he was elected to represent Worth county in the (GA) House of Representatives. He also served as a County Commissioner and as a member of the County School Board."
