Robert Randolph Medcalf Sr., 89, of Biglerville, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at the Gettysburg Lutheran Home. He was born in Baltimore, Md., on Dec. 19, 1919, to Myra Peck Medcalf and John Curtis Medcalf Sr.

He was educated at West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Md., where he set a track record in the half mile. Later he attended the Peabody School of Music and took classes at the Maryland Institute of Art. He was employed at Bendix Radio for 37 years. As an adult, he sang in Maryland with The Baltimore and Ohio Glee Club, Maryland Musicana, the St. Anna Players, and the choir at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rockdale, Md., where he also taught sixth grade Sunday school.

For much of his life, he enjoyed walking, swimming, and golf. After retirement, he sang in the choir at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Biglerville and with the Gettysburg Civic Chorus. He was also an enthusiastic volunteer coach for Special Olympics Golf in Biglerville.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Jr.; his sister, Helen Brunings; and his brothers, John Curtis and George Ackley Medcalf. Surviving him are his loving wife, Marie; his daughter, Janet and her husband Dr. Martin Schroeder; his daughter, Karen; and his daughter, Linda and her husband, Donald Love. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
