Cruz Gomez Niavez was born on May 3, 1932, in Mason, Texas. He entered heaven on July 8, 2018.

Cruz, also known as "Papa Cruz" was a lover of music and entertainment. By the age of eight, he taught himself how to play the guitar. He played numerous venues throughout his lifetime and he sang wherever a song or singer was requested, be it a serenata, a wedding, or a quinceañera.

We will always treasure the memories around our house with aunts, uncles, and cousins enjoying the party. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for our song, written especially for us, "Mis Cuatro Joyas." He helped form a mariachi trio "Los Tres Amigos" with Pablo Castro and Chon Hernandez and had the pleasure of playing with several other musicians. He was a prolific songwriter and composer with a song catalogue of 144 songs in the Tejano/Mariachi genre, the music of the heart and soul. He was determined to have a life as a musician, a journey that seemed to be destined for him. His musical talent can only be described as God-given.

After suffering three strokes at the age of 64, life changed his destiny once again. Encouraged by his daughter, Evelyn, he took up painting. In the last 10 years, he created over 500 original paintings.

Papa Cruz had a great sense of humor. He was courageous; giving up was never an option. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He kept strong in his faith by praying a daily rosary. Papa Cruz, you will be truly missed. We love you forever.

Cruz is preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Aguirre Niavez, and daughter, Bernice Niavez Logay.

He is survived by his daughters, Evelyn Niavez of San Angelo, TX, Marina Niavez Brown and husband Mark of Palmdale, CA, and Cynthia Niavez Bassham and husband Robert of San Angelo, TX. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Matthew Logay; his granddaughters, Taylor Renee Brown, 23, Nicole Marie Brown, 17, and Renee Solis, 14, as well as twin sisters, Lala Aguirre, Rosa Garcia and a very special brother in law, Noe Aguirre.

A graveside service will be held at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens on July 14, 2018, at 2 p.m.
