A. K. Long was Justice of the Peace in Cedarville beginning in 1873 and was also an attorney and judge of the Superior Court of Modoc County. When he died it was reported that Judge Long was a very original character in many ways, that his decisions were unique and at times gave way to a great deal of amusement.

He built the Golden Eagle Hotel in Cedarville in 1872, an old landmark of early days there, later called the Hotel Surprise, which burned down with four other buildings in 1924.

He married Jane E. Babcock in 1851 in Indiana, and they had one son, Harry Wilder Long, born about 1862 in California. Jane died of pneumonia in December 1893.

His second wife was Julia P. Crouse, who was a relative of his first wife. Julia survived him. After his death, Julia moved to southern California, where she died in 1928.
