Jesus was a communicant at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dilley and a man of deep faith. He and Angelita were one of the first Texas couples to attend a Cursillo retreat in Lubbock, Texas. Together, they raised eight children. It was well known in their home there was always room for more children: “donde come uno…comen todos”. Many knew of his love and compassion since he and Angelita never turned their backs on the lost and forsaken, especially the undocumented. Those who knocked at their door were unconditionally welcomed as family.

As a young man, Jesus traveled to west Texas where he trained horses eventually becoming an experienced and avid horseman. He understood the union of animal and earth and developed a keen appreciation for the land and its many uses while working as a foreman and alongside was his father-in-law, Juan Zepeda, as his family worked as migrant laborers in the cotton fields.

Returning to south Texas, he and his family continued to work the land harvesting watermelons and other produce. A man of natural mechanical aptitude, Jesus repaired and maintained the combines and other farm implements ensuring they were in good working order. To many farmers, he was known as the man to call when farm equipment needed repairing. Many a harvest was successful because of the prompt and accurate repairs performed by Jesus Martinez. He worked many years as a diesel engine mechanic for International Harvester and later with the John Deere Company. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Dilley Volunteer Fire Department.

In his golden years, he continued to repair engines and power equipment for friends and family. Many a visitor would find Jesus in his workshop next to his home tinkering on engines and other equipment. Several of his children and grandchildren learned the proper use of tools and the finer points of machinery repair from him while listening to music under the hot Texas sun.

Jesus was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. His extended family in Texas and across the country will miss him dearly.

Pall Bearers: Abel Gonzales Jr., Juan Salazar, Noel Salazar, Rogelio Salazar, Conrado Salazar, Nandito Rodriguez, Jonathan Salazar, Ezekiel Fabela
