The Ogdensburg Journal, Ogdensburg, NY, 01/16/1914, Excerpts: Age 44, born in Scotland, died in an accident in Chicago, when he fell down an elevator shaft. He was a former employee of the St. Lawrence State Hospirtal and other upstate NY businesses. He was the night manager of the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago. A broken elevator door had had a board put across it. Mr. Hughes backed up against it and it broke. He fell 14 feet, fracturing his skull. His body was brought to Carthage "and placed in the vault until spring". He married Miss Jessie Watt in Clayton NY. He is survived by his wife and two children, Albert and Virginia.
