a/k/a W. George Louder. a/k/a George Souder. Enlisted in the 4th New Jersey Infantry (3 month militia) on April 25, 1861, and was mustered out July 31, 1861 at the expiration of his term. The 4th NJ began their service at Meridian Hill and the occupation of Arlington Heights, Va. They took part in the construction of Fort Runyon. Next assigned to guard the Alexandria & Loudon Railroad until on July 16, when they were ordered to Manassas, Va. This unit was held in reserve at the battle of 1st Bull Run/Manassas, July 21. There after George enlisted in the U.S. Navy, July, 1863. He began his Naval career in Philadelphia aboard the USS Princeton, a large 1,370-ton armed steamer, some of whose timbers were those from the first USS Princeton, the U.S. Navy's first screw steam warship. The Princeton was employed during the Civil War as a receiver ship. He served on the USS Saratoga, a sloop of war. In June of 1863, the Saratoga was ordered to the Delaware Capes for guard duty. In January of 1864, she was ordered to the Carolinas as a part of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. After the war he made his living as a ship carpenter. He married Ellen Walker March 6, 1879.
