Portia Fincher Abbot, who resided at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort, Alabama, passed away May 18, 2018. She was born Portia Ann Fincher on April 5, 1930 in Eclectic, Alabama to Freeman Oscar and Aulsie Edwards Fincher. She grew up in nearby Alexander City, Alabama. Following graduation from the Ward-Belmont School in Nashville, Tennessee and the University of Alabama, she moved to Mobile, Alabama where she met and married Richard Taylor Abbot on December 22, 1958. She worked for a time at the Mobile Infirmary in a job then known as Medical Technologist. Following the birth of her two sons, the family moved to Sewanee, Tennessee where Mr. Abbot attended seminary. The family moved to Birmingham, Alabama where Reverend Abbot became Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church. She raised her children and worked as a Medical Technologist in Birmingham. Following her husband's retirement, they returned to the place they loved most – the over-the-bay area of Baldwin County. She is survived by her two sons, Richard Taylor Abbot, Jr. (Birmingham) and John Fincher Abbot (New York), and by six grandchildren, Adair Abbot Messer; Duncan Ross Abbot; Richard ("Rudy") Taylor Abbot, III; Helen Taylor Abbot; William Vogtle Abbot; and Ross Langdon Abbot. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband of 50 years, and by her sister Aulsie Mann Damson. She was the grateful beneficiary of the loving assistance and kindness of her nieces and nephew throughout her life, which they tendered in ever greater measure as her life approached a close: Beverly Brewer Clark (married to Ray Clinton Clark); Richard Weldon Mann (married to Sue Huff Mann); and Lynda Mann Zais (married to Colonel Barrie Zais). A funeral service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 151 South Ann Street, Mobile, Alabama, on Thursday June 7, 2018 at 10am. The family will receive family and friends afterwards.
