Chief Richard Brush suffered a fatal heart attack while attempting to break up a disturbance between two neighbors. The two men who were fighting were both city council members.

When Chief Brush arrived at the scene he stepped between the two and was able to calm the situation.

Shortly after clearing the scene he contacted dispatch and requested EMS to respond to his location. He was transported to a local hospital where he slipped into a coma. He remained on life support for four days until passing away.

Chief Brush had served in law enforcement for 41 years. He is survived by his wife.

POINT COMFORT - Richard "Rick" Brush, 60, of Point Comfort, died Monday, March 27, 2006.

He was born Sept. 22, 1945, in Slaton, to the late Richard C. and Geneta Maxey Brush. He was Chief of Police for the City of Point Comfort.
Survivors: wife, Martha Linda Wheeler Brush; daughters, Sammie Tribble Gonzales of Idalou, Michelle Wehmeyer and Tara Voges, both of Port Lavaca, and Jennifer Mikolas of Seadrift; sons, Mike Moore of Belton, Robert McCauley of Gonzales, James McCauley of Port Lavaca, and Stephen McCauley of Austin; sister, Sandy Self of Slaton; brother, Gary Brush of Slaton; and 18 grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: son, Gregory McCauley.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bauer Community Center in Port Lavaca, the Revs. John Fisher and Ron Shott officiating. Grace Funeral Home, Victoria, 361-573-4341.
