He served with the US Army 31st Infantry Regiment (the “Polar Bears”) in the Philippines in 1941 at the age of 14 years. After WWII broke out, he was sent to Corregidor, fought with the US Marines there, and was taken prisoner at Bataan. Following his release as a POW, he served in the US Army Air Forces during WWII and the US Marines during the Korean War. He was the author of the book, "Baby of Bataan".
