Jim played in the Ohio State Boys Band and was an Eagle Scout graduating from Ashland High School in 1960. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Purdue University and was a professor at Alma College (Michigan) from 1970-1983 when he moved to Denver, Colorado to become a stockbroker. From 1992-2005, living a solitary life as a beekeeper in Glade Park, Colorado, he rediscovered his voice as a poet. His book, Letters from a Stranger, won the 1999 Colorado Book Award in Poetry. He later moved to Central Mexico where he continued writing. His poetry has been widely published with a new book due out on Amazon in June, The Alphabet of Longing.
Jim is survived by his wife Martha, his children Jennifer Tipton (Michael) of Denver, James Tipton (Tanya) of Salt Lake City and Gabriella Rodriguez (Victor) of Ajijic, six grandchildren, two sisters, Peggy (Ed) Lutz and Nancy (Bob) Davis, many nieces and nephews as well as his family of friends in Mexico.
A celebration of life and readings of his poetry was held in Ajijic, Mexico on May 19.
