HICKORY - James Paul Adkins, 63, of Village Circle, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley. Born Feb. 16, 1944, in Yancey County, he was the son of the late Rev. Eules Grant and Bessie Mae Wheeler Adkins. He was an avid golfer, a U.S. Army veteran and for nearly 30 years he was general manager for Larry Smith Toyota. He is survived by a daughter, Jamie Carol Adkins of Long View; sons, Ken Wilson, James Adkins II, Kyle Adkins and Jeffery Adkins, all of Hickory; sisters, Louise Metcalf of Morganton and Wanda Phipps of Mount Gilead; brothers, Wayne Adkins and David Adkins, both of Forest City, Wade Adkins of Marion and Harold Adkins of Marshall, Texas; and six grandchildren. In addition to his parents, a sister, Lois Cannon; and a brother, E.G. Adkins Jr., preceded him in death. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2007, at Blackburn Baptist Church, with the Rev. Albert Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in Brookford Cemetery. The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
