Poet, Writer, Diplomat. Nervo is considered the most distinguished Mexican poet of the late 19th and early 20th century. Born Juan Crisóstomo Ruiz De Nervo on August 27, 1870 in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. His major collections include Serenidad (1914), Elevación (1916), and Plenitud (1918). In 1894 he moved to Mexico City and co-founded the magazine “Azul.” His first published work was the novel “El Bachiller” (1896), two years later he published his first books of poetry; “Perlas Negras” written in his youth and “Místicas.” Beginning in 1905, Nervo was part of the Mexican diplomatic corp; he was the secretary of the Mexican Legation in Madrid (Spain); the minister of Mexico in Buenos Aires (Argentina); and Montevideo (Uruguay), where the poet died on May 24, 1919. His body was returned to México and buried with honors.
