Joseph August himself was for a short time the head of state of Hungary.
When he died in 1962 he had been the last person to be appointed a Feldmarschall (Field Marshal) of the Austro-Hungarian Army on 24 October 1918, as an attempt by Kaiser Karl to calm Hungarian nationalists.
He remains were originally entered in the royal crypt at Friedhof Feldafing, but they were removed to the Royal Crypt at Buda Castle in 2005.
