Carolyn Norwood Scurlock passed away surrounded by loved ones on March 31, 2018 at Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest in Houston, TX. She was born in San Augustine, TX to Bernice and Tom Norwood and was a fifth generation Texan.
Carolyn graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. She then married her college sweetheart, James E. (Jimmy) Scurlock. She and Jimmy moved to Houston after graduation, and she remained a resident until her death. Carolyn was a longtime member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church and attended the Probers Sunday School Class.
After her daughters were grown, Carolyn had a 14-year career as a real estate broker with Jim West and Henry S. Miller. She enjoyed being active and was a member of many groups including The Lords and Ladies Dance Club, The River Oaks Dance Club, Who’s Who International, The Petroleum Club of Houston, DAR, The National Huguenot Society, The General Society of Mayflower Descendants, The National Society of the U.S. Daughters of 1812, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Bernice Norwood; husband, James E. (Jimmy) Scurlock; brother, Thomas A. Norwood; and sisters Eve Mayhall, Nell Covin, and Tomi Sowell.
She is survived by her love of 20 years and husband, W. Paul Wottring; her daughters, Rhonda Freeman-Anderson and her husband Jeff Anderson, and Shelley Gates and her husband Terry Burleson; her step-daughters Judy Fairchild (Paul) and Susie Babcock (Mike) and their families; and her sisters Doniece Wiggins, Ora Lee Dumas, and Jeannie Smith (Charles). She also leaves behind four grandchildren- James Freeman (Cassidy), Dane Gates, Morgan Daugherty (Jake) and Travis Freeman (Christina). Her six great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Hadley Freeman, Parker and Kyler Daugherty, Jase Gates, and Noah Freeman, will cherish her memory.
Her memorial will be held on April 6, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive.
