Jona loved people especially children. Jona was active in several Blacksburg Youth Groups. His passions were gardening and music. Jona played the guitar. When Jona's brother John Winfield Spangler became bed ridden, Jona assisted him in researching family genealogy through Church, Court and Cemetery Records and Archives.

Jonathan W. Spangler, 69, of Blacksburg, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 11, 2014, in Lewis Gale Medical Center in Montgomery County. John was born August 13, 1945, in Shawsville, and was one of 10 children born to Isaac E. Spangler and Ethel B. Craighead.He was preceded by his eight brothers and is survived by his one sister; along with three sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a few great-aunts and great-uncles. Jona is a United States Army Vietnam Service Veteran and a member of DAV, Chapter VA29.
