Samuel Alvin Bell, of Columbus, Ohio, who was a long time resident of Middletown, Ohio, passed away September 18, 2006. He was born December 25, 1910, the son of Samuel H. and Lulia Blanche(Crabtree)Bell. Following graduation from Zanesville High School, he graduated from Muskingum College, then completed a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Bell was a Research Engineer for Armco Steel (now AK Steel); first at the Zanesville Plant and then for the rest of his career at Armco Research in Middletown, Ohio. During his years in Middletown, he assisted in the development and use of taconite enhanced iron ore and was the co-holder of several patents in Blast Furnace Technology. During his many years in Middletown, he was an active member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church. He served as a Board member of United Way, the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, the Butler County Health Planning Committee, the Senior Citizen's Advisory Council and Big Brother/Big Sisters. He was also a former president of the Kiwanis Club. In 1999, he received the Alumni Distinguished Service Award from Muskingum College. He also served on the original committee that planned the Mt. Pleasant Retirement Community in Monroe, Ohio. Mr. Bell was predeceased by his brothers, Edwin, Arthur, Robert and his sister, Betty Elliott, all of the Zanesville area. He is survived by his wife of 70 years; Mary Eleanor(Peirce)of Columbus; his daughter, Susan(Donald)Williams of Holland, MI, and his son, Samuel(Joyce)of Columbus. He is also survived by four grandsons; David of Holland, MI, Brian(Heidi)Williams of Ann Arbor, MI, Patrick(Lori)Bell of Hudson, Oh, and Michael Bell of Columbus. He is also survived by a great grandson, Samuel Victor Bell of Hudson, Ohio.
