Dr. Vincent J. Colimore, linguist, author and retired college professor, died of cardiac arrest Tuesday at St. Joseph Medical Center. He was 83.
The longtime Cockeysville resident, who taught French, Spanish, German, Italian, Latin and English, was on the faculty of Towson State University from 1967 to 1982, when he retired.
He began his academic career in 1946, when he joined the faculty of Loyola College. He taught foreign languages and educational psychology and was chairman of the modern language department for many years.
At Towson State, he was professor of languages.
He conducted student tours of Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Austria at Loyola and Towson State.
Dr. Colimore also coached Loyola's tennis team.
He was the editor of "Selected Readings in Existentialism," "Selected Readings in Modern Language Teaching," "Readings in Scholasticism and Education" and wrote several volumes of poetry.
He also wrote book reviews for The Sun and translated the English writings of Claude Cuenot and Teilhard de Chardin to French.
Dr. Colimore, the son of Italian immigrants, was born in Baltimore and raised in the city's Little Italy section. He was a 1932 graduate of Loyola High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Loyola University in Chicago, a master's degree from Fordham University and a doctorate from New York University in 1967.
He was the recipient of a Fulbright-Hays Fellow Award and studied at the University of Rome.
He joined the Army in 1944 during World War II and, as an infantryman, fought in Italy and Germany. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of sergeant.
In addition to vegetable gardening, Dr. Colimore enjoyed tennis and played into his late 70s.
He was a member of the American Council of Foreign Language Association, the Knights of Columbus and the Sons of Italy.
A son, Michael T. Colimore, died in 1997. His nephew, rock musician Frank Zappa, died in 1993.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 101 Church Lane in Texas, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Miriam C. Holthaus; a son; two daughters; two sisters, Fifi Delores Guest of Santee, Calif., and Rose Marie Zappaof North Hollywood, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
