Horace was the son of George Alfred Coates & Elizabeth (Lizzie) J. Wright.

He married Evelyn Read Bennett at Albert County, New Brunswick on June 2, 1915.

Horace was a Physician in Vancouver. He did medical training at McGill and served in the Boar War and WW1. Served in South Africa 1899-1900 and France 1916-1918.

Suffered from gradually worsening hearing and heart problems. Was fit for duty in 1917 but unfit in 1919. Medically discharged.
