Rev. Jack Whitley, 87, of Tampa, formerly of Jacksonville, passed away on March 20, 2018, in Palm Harbor.

Jack was born on July 27, 1930 in Alton, Alabama. He graduated from Howard College, where he played football and was the president of the Letterman’s Club. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1958.
It was at the seminary where he met and fell in love with Helen Sue Elliott, who was from his hometown of Birmingham, Ala. They were married June 1, 1957, and had four children.

Jack was a longtime pastor in the Jacksonville area before retiring in 1999. After serving churches in Alabama, Jack and Helen joined the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board and served in Costa Rica, Venezuela and Bermuda.
Jack became pastor at Avondale Baptist Church in 1970, then First Baptist Church of Middleburg in 1982 and Ortega Baptist in 1992. He loved his family, his congregations, and being the chaplain for the Middleburg High football team.

Jack is survived by Helen, to whom he wrote a love letter every day, daughters Susan Wallace (Michael) and Rebecca Whitley, sons David (Marianna) and Stephen (Jennifer), six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as sisters Helen Gable, Lucille Hosmer, Eva Jo Philpot and her husband James, brother Robert Whitley and wife Shirley, and sisters-in-law Christine Whitley and Mary Ann Whitley.

Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday March 23, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Middleburg, 2645 Blanding Blvd, Middleburg, FL 32068. Family members will greet friends from 10:00 AM until the hour of service at the church. A graveside service and committal prayer will be held at 1:00 PM at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park.
