Joseph Cleophus (J.C.) Bridges, of Kings Mountain, NC died peacefully on February 14, 2017 at Carolinas Healthcare System-Kings Mountain.
He was born in Kings Mountain on October 19, 1923 to the late Glee A. Bridges and Addie H. Bridges--the first of four children.

Mr. Bridges graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1940 and attended Wake Forest College where he excelled in mathematics.
In 1943 he joined the Army Air Corps and trained to be a fighter pilot. He served stateside in Texas as a flight instructor during World War II. After discharge from regular service, he remained in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel with 29 years of military service.
After World War II, J.C and his brother, Glee, purchased Bridges Hardware from their father. They owned and operated this business for over 40 years.
J.C. lived a life of service to his church and community. A faithful member of Kings Mountain Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Director, and member of the choir.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for over seventy years. He served for four years on the Cleveland County Health Care advisory board and over thirty years on the Kings Mountain Hospital Board of Directors. Additionally, J. C. has served on the Advisory Board of the Life Enrichment Center and on the Wachovia Bank Board for forty years.
Following his retirement from the hardware business in 1988, J.C. enjoyed participating in the Senior Games competing in both the county and state levels. He was awarded numerous medals for his outstanding accomplishments in various events. In 2002, J.C. was nominated and selected to carry the Olympic torch through Charlotte prior to the Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City.

VISITATION: Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 16 in the Fellowship Hall at Kings Mountain Baptist Church from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: A memorial service will follow the visitation at 4:00 PM.
