On February 1, 1886, John Stratton died by drowning in the icy cold Delaware River, while preventing a boy, Benjamin J. Goldthorp, of 571 Walnut Street in Camden from drowning. Goldthorp lived into his 70s. John Stratton's funeral was largely attended and reported in the newspaper.
