He was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Champaign County, the son of the late Wallace and Estella (Chambers) Mahan.
He married Mary Carolyn Bartel on Jan. 26, 1949, in Pemberton and she survives him.
He is also survived by his children, Denise Kay and Ernest Moore of Gautier, Miss., and Mark and Kathleen Mahan of St. Paris; a daughter-in-law, Bernice Mahan of Rosewood; grandchildren, Jennifer (Adam) Bishop of Troy, and Dustin (Angel) Mahan of St. Paris; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tim Mahan; a daughter-in-law, Susan Mahan; and siblings, Ruth Lauderback, Edward Mahan, Dorothy Mae Mahan, Ralph Mahan, Amy Hamilton, Keith Mahan and Wilma Allebach.
Herbert graduated from St. Paris High School in 1939 and was in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, serving in the 10th Air Depot. He was a member of Keith Cretors American Legion Post 148, St. Paris.
He was engaged in farming all his life and also had worked in home construction and remodeling. He was formerly employed by Copeland and Monarch in Sidney.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, July 7, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield St., St. Paris, with the Rev. Clifford Kissinger of Springfield presiding. Burial will follow in Rosedale Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2006, and one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
