David was the child of Carl and Rachel Belver. His father retired from the Navy.
He enlisted in the Marines 24 July 1967, at a recruiting office in Providence.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 21 May 1968, David was assigned to Headquarters Company, 26th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. David died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the head and head from a hostile grenade, when hostile forces launched a ground assault at the 1st Marine Complex in the vicinity of Hill 327, 4 kilometers west of Danang. The Marines lost 40 men during the intense ground assault and fighting.
David died 5 days after his 21st birthday.
