David H. MacNeal, 21, of Upper Darby, who served in Operation Enduring Freedom, died May 4 in Upper Darby.
He joined the Marines in 1999 and reached the rank of lance corporal. The Marines honored him for dedication to duty in June 2002.
Mr. McNeal received a pilot's certificate at Lakehurst Naval Station. He organized a Marine Toys for Tots campaign in Fresno, Calif.
Mr. McNeal was born in Upper Darby. He had lived in Media and graduated from Penncrest High School in 1999.
Mr. McNeal was an acting lieutenant for the Lenni Heights Fire Co 54 for seven years and was honored as fireman of the year in 1998.
He was an Eagle Scout in Troop 342 in Media, and the Union League honored him for reaching the rank of Eagle Scout.
Mr. McNeal was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Deputy Commander for Cadets at Delco Composite Squadron 1007 (Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force Auxiliary), and recipient of the Valley Forge Freedom Medal.
He studied the bagpipes and was a member of the McNeal Clan and Tartan Society.
