David Craig Schanbacher, 62, of Austin, TX formerly of Hannibal, MO passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, December 11, 2017.
David was born on August 22, 1955, in Hannibal, MO the son of Albert G. and Janis (Craig) Schanbacher.
Survivors include his mother, Janis Schanbacher of Hannibal, MO; one sister, Pam Hesterlee and husband Ed of Ponte Vedra, FL; one brother, James Scott Schanbacher of Westwood, KS; one nephew, Justin Hesterlee and wife Kristin of Atlantic Beach, FL; one niece, Stephanie Hesterlee of Jacksonville, FL; and one great nephew, Landon Hesterlee.
Mr. Schanbacher was preceded in death by his father on December 19, 1999.
David graduated from Hannibal High School in 1973. He went on to further his education at the University of Missouri and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1978.
Upon graduation David began his career with Shell Chemical Company. During his career with Shell, David managed large groups of environmental employees, testified on environmental regulations, and spoke publicly and advised on a varied array of environmental issues. David later joined Exxon Company as a project engineer. He later served as a partner with Savant Corporation in Houston before joining the public sector. Mr. Schanbacher also worked as a permit engineer for the Texas Air Control Board, technical specialist and air quality coordinator for the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission, policy analyst for the Texas Senate Natural Resource Committee, chief engineer for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and natural resource policy director for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. David earned his master’s in electrical engineering form the University of Texas in 1997. In 2013 he joined the Sage Environmental Consultants in Austin, TX as an environment and energy policy advisor. Currently David worked as an environmental consultant.
When not working, David enjoyed traveling, especially to Hannibal to see his mother and the town he so loved. Playing bridge, photography, reading, watching Missouri sports anything from St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Chief’s, K.C. Royals to the Mizzou Tigers were all things David enjoyed doing during his free time.
David’s biggest love was his family and genealogy of the Schanbacher family, in which he wrote a book about that dated back to their German heritage “Schanbacher Family History of Hannibal”.
Mr. Schanbacher was a member of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum and St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Pallbearers will be Don Bastian, Paul Richards, Rob Parham, Carl Ball, Matt Oleksy, and Dr. Stephen Halpin.
