Clara Westhoff studied - doubtless shortly prior to 1900 - under Max Klinger in Leipzig. She joined the artist colony at Worpswede as a pupil of the sculptor and painter Fritz Mackensen. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke visited Worpswede and was attracted to Clara Westhoff.
In 1901 she married Rilke in Worpswede. Eighteen years later, in 1919, she moved to Fischerhude with her daughter, Ruth Rilke.
