William McKinley Shirley was born on May 23, 1897 in Otoe county, Nebraska, to parents, Robert Shirley (b.1875) and Roxanna Green (b.1878). His mother died on September 19, 1905, and is buried at Peru, Nebraska. After her death Robert, being a heavy drinker and not dependable, could not care for the three children. Roxannie's brother and wife, Curt and Jane Green, chose to take the kids while on the farm, and when Curt and Jane moved to town Mack, sister Mearl Marie and brother Robert Leo went to live with another uncle and aunt, the Lenore Green and Leonard South family.

"Mack" was a farmer, as his family had been for many generations. By age 18 he had moved to South Dakota and was in the state census there. On September 29, 1917, he married Margaret Schicker, in Argyle, Custer county, South Dakota. Within a year he joined the US Army and was inducted at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was in the 63rd Co., 163rd Depot Brigade. In 1918 he was one of 702 men there who died in the terrible flu epidemic that peaked in October. His body was returned to South Dakota for burial.
