"Mack" was a farmer, as his family had been for many generations. By age 18 he had moved to South Dakota and was in the state census there. On September 29, 1917, he married Margaret Schicker, in Argyle, Custer county, South Dakota. Within a year he joined the US Army and was inducted at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was in the 63rd Co., 163rd Depot Brigade. In 1918 he was one of 702 men there who died in the terrible flu epidemic that peaked in October. His body was returned to South Dakota for burial.
