Charles Washington was the youngest son of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary (Ball) Washington, and was the youngest brother of President George Washington. He was married in 1757 to Mildred Thornton, the daughter of Colonel Francis Thornton and his wife, Frances (Gregory) Thornton. They settled in what is now Jefferson County, West Virginia, in 1780 and founded the city of Charles Town. They resided there on their estate, Happy Retreat. While he died in what was at the time the state of Virginia, it is now West Virginia.
