BOWDOIN - Geneva Velma (Newbegin) Adams, 89, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2018 at Freeport Nursing Home with her granddaughters by her side.

She was born September 27, 1928 in Woodland, Maine, the youngest of seven children to Raymond and Adelma (Laffaty) Newbegin.

At the age of 4, she and four siblings came to live at the Anderson Farm in West Bowdoin as foster children. Here she grew up under the care of Helen & Alexander Anderson and Florence Starbird.

Geneva attended local schools and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1946.

On June 26, 1948, she married Laurence T. Adams. They celebrated 50 years together in 1998, just before his passing in January 1999.

Together they had three children, sadly losing two before her own passing. Cheryl (Adams) Daigle, born in 1951, died in 1974 leaving behind a two-year old son, Brian. Laurence Jr. was stillborn in 1954. Karen (Adams) Mayo, born in 1960, was her mother's supporter and advocate untill her passing.

Geneva's grandchildren, Brian Daigle, Aaron Mayo, Adam Mayo, Jessica Mayo and Jennifer (Mayo) Crowe, were the "loves of her life" and brought her incredible Joy. She had four great-grandchildren, Ansley, Alexander, Anderson and Holden and another due in February.

Geneva's passion was working at Bowdoin Central School for 32 years; first in the kitchen preparing homemade meals, then as secretary for 25 years. After her retirement in 1994 she continued volunteering regularly. Her loving, compassionate ways touched the lives of many students.

With the exception of a short period of time when they lived in Maryland, Laurence and Geneva called Bowdoin home. Community involvement was important to her. She was Past Matron of Electa Chapter #2 O.E.S. Bowdoinham, and a member of the Bowdoin PTC, Fire Department Auxiliary, Harvest Days, West Bowdoin Baptist Church & Mission Circle, Crime Prevention, Historical Society, and Carter's Corner Cackle Club.

For the last 13 years of her life, Geneva lived at Freeport Nursing Home due to health issues. We thank the staff there for her excelent care and for making it feel like her "home away from home".

In addition to her husband and children, she is predeceased by brothers Clifford, Floyd and Raymond and sisters Margaret (McCollum), Thelma (Grant) and Arline (Henry).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Bowdoin's Friends Helping Community Food Pantry @ 1144 Main Street, Bowdoin 04287.
