William Gross was born in August 1891 in south Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, very probably in or near the former Dutch truck farmers settlement of Roseland, since 1892 a southern district of Chicago.

On January 12, 1892 his father Hans (Henry, Herman) Gros died at the age of 40 years in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In June 1900 William Gross (9 years old, born in August 1891 in Illinois), his mother Antje Gross (51, widow, February 1849, Holland, immigrated in 1881, mother of 2 deceased and 8 living children, grocery store keeper), siblings Gerrit (17, July 1883, Illinois, farm laborer), Johannes (15, November 1885, Illinois, store errand-boy), Ettie (14, December 1886, Illinois) and Charles (11, June 1889, Illinois), were living in a rented house at 10848 Wentworth Street in Ward 34 of south Chicago, Calumet Township, Cook County, Illinois.

In April 1910 William Gross (18, farm laborer) was living at 100 Pullman Road, Ward 33, south Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, on the farm of his brother David Gross (31, Holland, immigrated in 1881, farmer), his wife Lottie (32, Sweden, immigrated in 1890, mother of 5 living children), and their children Jennie (9, Illinois), Henry (7, Illinois), Adolf (5, Illinois), Martin (3, Illinois) and Harold (0 months, Illinois).

On October 4, 1911 William H. Gross married in Chicago the also 20 years old Grace Groustra, who had Dutch/Frisian parents too.
