Born in Philadelphia, he was a resident of Holmes for 38 years. He was a former resident of the Roxborough section of Philadelphia.
Self-employed, he owned J & M Janitorial Services for three years, retiring in 1989. He was a driver/salesman for Pepsi Bottling Co., and also worked for Abbotts Dairies.
He was a family man who enjoyed sports.
He was predeceased by his father Raymond Paul Colgan Sr. and mother Mary Ellen (nee O'Dea) Colgan, as well as his brothers Raymond P. Colgan, Jr. and Robert A. Colgan, and his sister Joan Colgan Mummo.
Survivors: wife of 42 years, Virginia R. (Snyder) Colgan; sons, James J. Colgan Jr. and Eric C. Colgan, both of Holmes, and Mark J. Colgan and David S. Colgan, both of Clifton Heights; sisters, Rose M. Colgan Papa of Broomall and Mary Louise Colgan Gavin of Maryland; and seven grandchildren.
