SVOBODA, Mr. James Myron 81, passed away on October 8, 2017. He was born on the family farm outside of St. Paul, Nebraska on June 26, 1936 to Joseph and Anna (Klepetko) Svoboda. After attending a one-room country school in Howard County, he graduated from St. Paul High School in 1953. After graduation, he served four years in the US Navy aboard a P5M-1 Marlin seaplane as a member of Patrol Squadron VP-48. After serving in the US Navy, he worked as a radio technician with Collins Radio Company for six years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In November of 1961, he married Virjean Goldsmith at the "Little Brown Church in the Vale" in Nashua, Iowa. To this union was born a son, Joel and a daughter, Sheryl. In March of 1966, the family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where Jim worked for Motorola as a technician for seven years, and then after receiving an accounting degree at Arizona State University in 1973, he continued to work for Motorola as an accountant for 25 years, before retiring in 1998. In 1999, Jim and Virjean moved to Overgaard, Arizona where they lived together until Virjean's death on November 1, 2011. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling (a trip to Japan, two trips to the Czech Republic and three weeks in Germany). He is survived by his son, Joel; daughter, Sheryl and grandson, Peter of Tucson, Arizona. Also surviving are his brother, Milroy (Jan) Svoboda; brother, Dale Svoboda; sister, Betty (Wayne) Galusha; sister-in-law, Marilyn; a few cousins and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Franklin (Agnes) Svoboda; brother, Earl Svoboda and brother, Lyle (Irene) Svoboda. He was a 51-year member of Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ. His wish was to have a Viewing at the mortuary in the same fashion as his wife. The Viewing will be at MESSINGER MORTUARY, 7601 E. Indian School Road in Scottsdale from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017. Cremation will follow with ashes to be interred in Tucson. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jim's name to either of the following organizations: check payable to the University of Arizona Foundation/Arizona Cancer Center mailed to 1515 N. Campbell Ave., PO Box 245013, Tucson, Arizona 85724 or Casa de la Luz Hospice at https://casafoundation.org/ways-to-give/donations. Arrangements entrusted to MESSINGER INDIAN SCHOOL MORTUARY.
