Iraqi Prime Minister. He served briefly as the Prime Minister of Iraq under President Saddam Hussein from March to September 1991. Born in Karbala, Iraq, as a Shi'te, he served as a member of the Ba'ath Party in the 1940s. Hammadi also served as the Iraqi Oil Minister, Iraqi Foreign Minister from 1974 to 1983, and as Speaker of the National Assembly of Iraq from 1996 to 2003. After the Fall of Baghdad in 2003, Hammadi was imprisoned by American soldiers until February 2004. He was later released from American custody and sent to Qatar. He died in a German hospital where he had been seeking medical attention for cancer.
