Awarded for actions during the World War II

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] Robert Godfrey Amme (NSN: 0-1654489), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commander of a Motor Torpedo Boat in Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron SIX (MTB-6), operating against enemy Japanese forces during the New Georgia and Bougainville Campaigns in the Solomon Islands, from 13 February 1943 to 2 January 1944. Encountering eight Japanese barges while on patrol duty with his section in Kula Gulf, the night of 18 August 1944, Lieutenant Amme boldly defied relentless machine-gun and artillery fire from shore batteries and barges to engage the enemy in a bitterly-fought attack and, upon retiring, laid an effective smoke screen which drew the fire from his companion boats and enabled them to withdraw to safety. By his gallant fighting spirit and inspiring leadership, Lieutenant Amme contributed materially to the interruption and destruction of hostile shipping in this area, and his courageous and loyal devotion to duty throughout numerous hazardous operations was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
