Ora Jean Allman, 83, of Old Mill Road in Jane Lew passed away at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017, in the comfort of her daughter’s home with the loving assistance of her caregivers.
She was born in Shinnston on October 12, 1934 a daughter of the late French Raymond and Agnes Viola Hayes Richards.
On January 8, 1955 she married the love of her life, Hayward “Catfish” Allman and shared 62 wonderful years before his passing on April 2, 2017.
Her generous and loving nature will be carried on by one daughter, Becky Taylor and husband, Randy and one son, Roger Allman and wife, Sharon. She leaves behind five grandchildren, Greg Allman, Heather Butcher, Allen Allman, Ashley Morrell and Nicole Hopkins and eight great grandchildren, Lilly and Karah Morrell, Brooklyn and Olivia Allman, Abram and Wyatt Butcher, Peyton and Maddy Allman all of whom she adored. Her brother, Jerry Richards, will remember her strong willed spirit. She was especially appreciative of the daily calls from close friend, Wilda Berg.
In addition to her parents and husband, she has been reunited in Heaven with one brother, Jim Richards and one sister, Barbara Lou Searson.
Ora Jean was employed by the Lewis County Board of Education for more than 30 years where, as secretary, she shared her vibrant and gifted personality with everyone. Additionally, she coached cheerleading and softball, assisted with the publication of yearbooks, painted the original redskin in the gymnasium, and ran the summer youth program.
She was a faithful and active member at the Broad Run Baptist Church where she shared her generosity as a deaconess. She also served on many missionary boards, organized Christmas dinners, directed Christmas plays, organized Christmas Gift programs for the less fortunate, directed Bible School, and published the church newsletter. Further illustrating her passionate devotion to the church, she served as the President of the American Baptist Women, served on the Broad Run Association Board, founded the Care and Share Program, founded and organized the Mother-Daughter Banquet, and was a member of the Broad Run Church Choir. After the attack on 9/11 she painted a gigantic American Flag in the field she and her husband owned. She enjoyed swimming, laying in the sun, singing gospel hymns, and above all spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She never missed an activity or birthday when her grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved.
In addition to her church activities, Ora Jean was one of the original Free Spirits, a group of lady singers that traveled and recorded cassette tapes. She also wrote songs independently and sent them to be considered by famous artists.
Friends and family will gather at the Pat Boyle Funeral Home and Cremation Service at 144 Hackers Creek Rd. in Jane Lew from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday from the Pat Boyle Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bill Coffindaffer officiating. Interment will follow in the Broad Run Cemetery.
