After a courageous two year battle with cancer, Rosemary Avila Dean age 68, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother died on October 10, 2017 at her home in Fillmore, CA. She is survived by her husband, Claud L. Dean; son, Eric L. Dean with grandchildren Lily T. Dean, Garrett P. Dean, and Lukas C. Dean; daughters, Jessica M. Dean and Christina M. White (Christian T.); sisters Rita Gallegos (Bennie), Virginia Hull (Robert); brother Jim Avila and numerous nieces , nephews, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her mother and, sister Mona Jones, brother-in-law Curtis Jones, and son-in-law Christian T. White.
Rosemary was born on April 27, 1949 in Oxnard, CA, to Jesus Tejada Avila and Emilia Rivera. She grew up in a loving family with three sisters and a brother and graduated from Adolfo Camarillo High School in 1967. During that summer, she captured the heart of an U.S. Navy sailor on an Oxnard beach. Over the next 3 years they loved to experience Ventura County’s eateries such as Uncle Herbs, Sals, Loops, The El Camino, and many more, enjoying motorcycle rides up and down the coast.
On June 12, 1970 Rosemary married AT1 Claud L. Dean at Point Mugu Naval Air Station and unwittingly transitioned into a career Navy Wife that spanned over 20 years. During those years , Rosemary and Claud enjoyed many adventures which took them to Spain, Maine where they traveled, camped, and ate their way through Europe. Claud retired from the US Navy in 1987 and remained in Ventura County, CA.
Rosemary was a dedicated mother and housewife that loved and cared for her family with a passion. She devoted countless years volunteering her time as Room/Tap Mom at her daughters’ elementary school, Los Primeros and was an advocate for school safety and preparedness. She enjoyed camping trips with family to Carpinteria, El Capitan, as well as, taking trips to Lake Tahoe and Hawaii. Following her cancer diagnosis, she remained dedicated to her family and fought her illness throughout her final months.
Rosemary’s ashes will be interred at the National Cemetery, Santa Nella, CA and will be joined by her husband, a Vietnam era veteran, upon his death. A Memorial Service will be held at Saint Mary Magdalen Church, Camarillo, CA on Friday 3 November, 2017 at 10:00 AM with a reception to follow.
