Mary Evelyn Ratzell was born in 1909 to William Vincent Scholl Ratzell and Elizabeth Hackman Freed. She was the oldest of their two children, both daughters.
Mary married Charles Burton Rickert in 1936 and they had one child, Mary Elizabeth Rickert. Charles died in 1953 and Mary never remarried.
