Barbadian Statesman. He served as the Governor-General of Barbados from June 1, 1996 to October 31, 2011. He received his secondary education from Parry School and Harrison College and then went into teaching at Parry School for three years. He then went to London, England to study law at Middle Temple. He later qualified as a barrister and was called to the Bar in 1952. He went back to Barbados and started a private law practice. would later go into government service and held several judicial offices before being appointed a judge on the nation's supreme court in 1976. He was promoted to Justice of Appeal in 1991 and held this position until 1996 when he was named the island nation's Governor-General. He served in this position until stepping down in 2011, becoming the longest-serving Governor-General in Barbadian history.
